Hello!  My name is Sarah Acton, and I am a senior at the University of Kentucky majoring in Apparel and Textile Merchandising.  I am in my last year of college and decided to take “A&S 100-049: South Africa & Kentucky: Different Lands, Common Ground” for fun.

I have never been out of this country until recently.  This summer I traveled to Central America with my boyfriend, and because of this, I am a changed person.

First of all, being a white girl from a small town, besides being the only female in a family of 4, I had never experienced being in the minority.  When I backpacked through Guatemala and Mexico, I could not speak a full sentence in Spanish except “El baño necesito”. (is that even a complete sentence?)  Thank goodness my travel companion spoke the language!  Anyway, the point is that I was terrified of being in the minority…and it felt really good!  It was also amazing to see how different people are, and that even though they are different (e.g. NO AIR CONDITIONING!), it doesn’t mean they are any less than I am.  I mean, I already knew this, but I had never really experienced it.

Anyway, what I am really getting at is that now I am fascinated by different cultures.  I mean I absolutely crave it!  So I decided to take this class and participate in the Program in International Understanding to learn about a country and people I knew ZERO about.  I hope you enjoy!
